A Day at The Theatre!

When considering enjoyable activities worthy of raising funds for the Berkshire Mark 2017 Festival, it seemed most apt, with the approaching centenary of the commencement of the Great War, to pick a theatre trip to see the show “War Horse” in London.  So, on Thursday, 24th July, under a mercifully cloudy sky in the recent hot weather, a coach, half-full, left the west end of the Province to wend its way to Sindlesham Court where a second group of theatre-goers filled the coach.  By this time, the sun had begun to shine and provided hot, bright and humid weather conditions (thank goodness for the air conditioning).  On route a fun quiz was available for those so inclined – whether this cooled the brain or otherwise was unclear!

On reaching The Aldwych, after enjoying a scenic route through London besides the Thames, the passengers disembarked and spent 90 minutes walking around the Covent Garden area and having a bite to eat before congregating at the New London Theatre, Drury Lane to see the wonderful, theatrical performance of “War Horse”.  The puppetry was amazing and the scanty scenery on stage did not deter from creating a sympathetic atmosphere conducive of telling the story and entertaining the audience.  It was easy to feel empathy with the sufferings and triumphs of men and horses.

Following the show, the coachman ferried the day-trippers back to Sindlesham Court and answers to the quiz were revealed, causing some merriment.  At Sindlesham an evening meal was provided with much discussion of the day and other interesting topics of conversation combined with much laughter.  The Provincial Grand Master, Richard Olliver and his wife Margaret joined the party for dinner.  All then went home with fond memories of the event.  In all, 53 people attended the Theatre and 45 people dined in the evening.  A pleasant and enjoyable day which raised some funds for the forthcoming Festival proved a success.  The day was planned, organised and managed by Silverio Ostrowski (of Erlegh Mark Lodge) and his wife Katharine who thank the participants for supporting this whole day activity combining fun, an historic anniversary and fund raising for the 2017 Festival.
